Project Overview
This training was created to help Cisco employees apply responsible data handling practices when collecting, storing, processing, and sharing sensitive employee and candidate information. The course reinforces compliance with global privacy regulations and Cisco’s internal data protection policies while helping employees understand the ethical responsibilities associated with managing personal data within enterprise systems.
Employees regularly interact with personal data through platforms such as Workday, internal collaboration tools, and reporting systems. Improper handling of this information can expose the organization to legal risk, regulatory penalties, and reputational damage. The goal of this course was to reinforce responsible data practices while helping employees understand both the ethical and operational implications of managing personal data.
The course introduces learners to the foundational principles of responsible data handling, including data minimization, purpose limitation, secure storage practices, and reporting procedures for data incidents. Learners also explore how privacy laws, internal policies, and security classifications influence how information must be handled in daily work.
The training emphasizes the importance of protecting individuals’ rights while maintaining trust with employees, customers, and stakeholders. Key topics include the ethical responsibilities associated with personal data, the importance of secure data sharing practices, and the procedures employees must follow if they suspect a data breach or misuse.
Design Process
The design process began with reviewing Cisco’s internal privacy policies and regulatory guidance related to employee data protection. These source materials included documentation on global privacy regulations, internal data classification standards, and incident reporting procedures.
From this analysis, the core learning outcomes were identified and structured around the practical behaviors employees must demonstrate when handling personal data. These behaviors included recognizing sensitive data types, applying proper data storage practices, and responding appropriately to data requests and potential incidents.
To support knowledge retention and application, the course was organized into short instructional segments followed by scenario-based knowledge checks. Realistic workplace situations were used to help learners evaluate how privacy principles apply in everyday decisions, such as sharing information, responding to requests for employee data, or collecting additional personal details for business activities.
The course concludes with a summary of key principles and links to corporate policies and privacy resources so learners can reference them after completing the training.
Instructional Design Strategy
The instructional strategy focused on helping employees translate abstract privacy policies into practical decision-making behaviors.
Rather than presenting policy language alone, the course used a scenario-driven structure where learners evaluated realistic workplace situations involving personal data. These scenarios required learners to identify appropriate actions when handling sensitive information, responding to customer requests for employee data, or determining the correct way to share documents securely.
The learning experience combined short instructional videos with interactive knowledge checks that reinforced key principles such as data minimization, appropriate data sharing channels, and incident reporting responsibilities. This approach allowed learners to immediately apply concepts in context rather than passively consuming policy content.
The course also emphasized ethical responsibility and trust as core themes, highlighting how responsible data practices support employee confidence, customer trust, and regulatory compliance.
